Poetry

Hey wait. This isn’t the pottery page. Why is there pottery here?….

Because from July 1 through September 30, 2023, I have three poems on display with companion art pottery at my first art show that’s why!

And just two days before opening night, I received notification of the inclusion of some of my poems in the upcoming 2023 edition of Dialogue, a publication of EmpowerHer*Voice. In a twist of kismet with art, one of those pieces, The Box Maker, is part of the art show.

The Electric Womb features 10 woymn poet/artists. I had tremendous fun stretching myself artistically to create work from ceramics that echoes and expresses my poetry.

Apparently, August 2023 is the “Electric” month. I was interviewed by Susan Taylor of the Electric Picnic which aired in August on KNSJ radio. Did you miss it? Don’t worry! They were kind enough to send me the recording.

I never planned to write poetry. I know, that’s pretty weird to see here, on a page not only about poetry, but on a site where I’ve already described myself as both a writer and poet (not to mention music! Hello, what are lyrics if not poetry?) But nevertheless, it’s true. Before I sat to pen stories, I never thought I’d be writing those either. But in January of 2020, in a moment of deep self exploration in the wake of a personally extraordinarily intense year, I found myself writing …. a poem.

Thank God for friends. I sheepishly sent what I’d written to a writer friend. I expected to get some kind of “not bad, keep at it” type of response. What I didn’t expect was her to ask me to come read it at a poetry open mic she was hosting the next week. Nor did I expect the way it was received. And I never fathomed I’d write more poetry, much less that it would start pouring out. But I’m eternally grateful.

One of the things I love about poetry is it’s so mutable. It’s the ultimate scene painting with words. Perhaps it’s an emotion that needs to be released. Maybe a recollection of a place or time. A thought, or feeling, or even a musing on the world around…. or within. Poetry is so freeing!

Hey! You’re still here….
Thank you!!!!
